The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced a final rule to classify all chimpanzees, both wild and captive, as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The decision brings to an end “split listing,” in which only wild chimpanzees were listed as endangered while captive chimpanzees were listed as threatened. The decision will significantly captive chimpanzees held for research, entertainment and the pet trade.
