HELP US BUILD AN INTEGRATION ENCLOSURE

When we bring orphaned chimpanzees to Sanaga-Yong Rescue Center our goal is to integrate them into a social community as soon as possible. The quality of a chimpanzee's friendships and social support determine the quality of his/her life. Larger, more complex social groups offer greater opportunities for deep friendships and alliances, but it's not always easy to bring orphans together into harmonious adoptive groups.

At Sanaga-Yong Rescue Center we try to give each of our rescued chimpanzees a second chance for a rich and fulfilling family life, and our many successes have been extremely rewarding. However integrations must proceed carefully and slowly for the safety of everyone.

During the second half of this year, we will attempt to integrate two small groups - one consisting of adults and the other of adolescent and maturing juveniles - to form a larger, more socially complex and interesting community. In order to accomplish it, we must build an extension onto one of the enclosures - an integration cage - that will give the two groups space to get acquainted safely before going to the forest together. The new structure will also serve as expanded sleeping quarters to accommodate the larger group.

The cost of the integration enclosure, which we hope to complete before the end of October, will be $7,500. If just 100 of our generous friends pledge $25 per month for three months, we will have enough funding to complete the structure. One-time donations are also very much appreciated!
